Brewer Celebrates Monson Woman for Volunteer Efforts
(Boston) – On July 19, 2012, Senator Stephen M. Brewer (D-Barre) joined the Boston Celtics in honoring Karen King of Monson at the Massachusetts State House. Karen was recognized by the Celtics and the Massachusetts State Lottery as part of their Heroes Among Us program for her volunteerism following the June 1, 2011 tornado, that devastated her home town a year ago.
“Karen is a true testament to the word ‘community’,” said Brewer. “The town of Monson, and really the whole Commonwealth, felt the effects of last year’s tornado. It is because of the hard work and fighting spirit of people like Karen that the affected residents were able to pull through and rebuild. Her leadership was unfaltering and she really has made a difference.”
Following the storm, Karen became the liaison between FEMA and the people of Monson, organized volunteer groups to assist the families in need and even found new housing for those affected. She has since formed her own foundation, Monson Street Angel, to aid her cause.
Heroes Among Us honors individuals who have made an overwhelming impact on the lives of others. The award is presented to an individual or individuals who, through their unique commitment and humanitarian spirit, have made exceptional and lasting contributions to our community.
