Brewer Secures Representation for Call/Volunteer Firefighters

(Boston) – Senator Stephen M. Brewer (D-Barre) announced today that a bill that will expand the Massachusetts Fire Service Commission to include a member of the Massachusetts Call/Volunteer Firefighters’ Association has passed the Senate.

“The input this commission will gain from these volunteer firefighters is critical.  Many small towns across the Commonwealth rely on the public service of these brave men and women at little to no cost,” Brewer stated.  “They are imperative to public safety and their knowledge is far reaching.  This bill will ensure the rural population in Massachusetts is heard.”

Under this bill, the Fire Service Commission will be expanded to 7 members and the additional appointee must hold the rank of firefighter or fire officer.  The commission is responsible for appointing the State Fire Marshal as well as advising the Marshal on state and national fire codes.  Additionally, the commission consults with the Massachusetts Fire Training Council which oversees firefighter training in the state.  Earlier this session, Senator Brewer and his colleagues passed a bill to include a call/volunteer firefighter on the Training Council as well.

“Nearly half of all firefighters in this state are call/volunteer firefighters and all of my 29 towns rely on these types of departments.  I am committed to making sure their input is heard,” Brewer continued.

The bill will now go before the House of Representatives.
